The motives behind the tough change are to cut down crime in the area. The Council offer to limit the number of shops given alcohol licences.

Since the area has a high crime rate the Council think it might be because of the fact that so many shops sell alcohol.

Burnt Oak had the highest rate of alcohol-related crime in Barnet during the last 12 months so the council is focusing on that area.

Some are worried that this will cause the problem with the crime to spread to neighbourhoods close by but Emma Phasey, the council’s group manager for community protection, says there’s nothing to worry about and that they have everything handled.
