Oral hygiene is not something to be taken likely. Here we’d like to offer you a homemade toothpaste recipe that will help you look after it better. All you need are several simple ingredients that can be found in every kitchen.
Why make your own toothpaste?
The regular brands of toothpaste that can be found in every drug-store and supermarket contain several chemicals and other ingredients that more and more people feel comfortable using. If you want to avoid such compounds and even save money, then the coconut oil and baking soda toothpaste is the answer for you. What is more, this natural recipe is just as effective as any commercial toothpaste that you can find on the market.
The ingredients you’d want to avoid
Commercial toothpaste has a bunch of potentially dangerous components in their formula. Nearly every brand on the market has titanium dioxide, FD&C Blue Dye # 1 & 2, sodium lauryl sulfate, and sodium fluoride on their labels. Even if the toothpaste is branded as “all natural”, traces of sodium fluoride can be found in it. The problem is that those chemicals are harmful for more delicate tooth enamel. Some studies even suggest they can have a negative effect on your overall health. Fluoride-free toothpaste may be found in your local drug-store, but even it contains glycerin, which lowers the mineral levels in your teeth. That is why we encourage you to seek real natural solutions, like the baking soda and coconut oil solution.
How does it work?
It’s a well known fact that coconut oil has antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal qualities. It is particularly efficient when the bacteria causing teeth-decay are to be destroyed. Baking soda on the other hand has long been used in homemade cleaning solutions due to its mild abrasive. In the case with the toothpaste, it helps whitening your teeth and even balancing the pH levels in your mount cavity.
The Recipe
The coconut oil and baking soda toothpaste is made of:
- 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil
- 2 tablespoons Baking Soda
- 10 drops of Peppermint oil (optional)
You can add more or less ingredients depending on the number of people that are going to use the toothpaste and the container you will use to store it in. Just follow the 1:1:5 proportions. Make a paste out of the baking soda and the coconut oil. Pour it into the container you will store it in. If you’d like to add a flavor to the toothpaste, just add the peppermint oil drops and mix. It is just as easy as it sounds.
