Two towns, one borough, one bridge that costs you a tenner a week if you don’t sort the LUDS pass. That’s Halton in a sentence. We’re hiring a part-time domestic cleaner across Runcorn (WA7) and Widnes (WA8) at £13 an hour, paid weekly, on regular fortnightly rounds. Two-hour minimum visit. Bank transfer every Friday.
That’s the headline. The rest is the small print and a few honest notes on what working a Halton round actually looks like.
Where the rota is
Most of our work splits roughly half-half between the two main towns. On the Runcorn side (WA7) you’ve got the planned new-town housing built out in the 1960s and 70s around Halton Lea, Castlefields and Murdishaw, plus the older Victorian terraces in Runcorn Old Town behind Church Street, and a steady run of newer detached and semi work in Sandymoor and Beechwood. On the Widnes side (WA8) it’s mostly the Victorian and 1930s terraced streets either side of Albert Road and Widnes Road, with a smaller block of cottages out in Hale.
A handful of period cottages in Daresbury village and a couple of barn conversions on the lanes north of the M56 round out the rota. End-of-tenancy work comes in mainly through the lettings desks at Bests on Runcorn High Street and Martin & Co on Albert Road in Widnes. The mix is properly varied. You won’t be cleaning the same kind of property twice in a week.
The bridge thing, because everyone asks
If you live in Halton borough you can register for the Local User Discount Scheme (LUDS) via Merseyflow and cross the Mersey Gateway and the Silver Jubilee Bridge as often as you like for an annual fee (£12 a year, or £10 if you set up auto-renewal). That makes the whole borough realistically commutable on one job. If you’re not a Halton resident, you’ll be paying a toll per crossing, so we’d usually keep your jobs on one side of the river. We don’t book new starters into a rota that bounces them across the Mersey Gateway four times a day. That would be daft.
The pay, plainly
£13 an hour. Weekly. Mileage paid above 4 miles between jobs at 30p a mile.
We pay weekly because monthly is rough on anyone new in the role waiting for a first wage to land.
Hours and shape of the week
Part-time means part-time. Around 16 to 24 hours a week to start, weekday daytimes, with the option of one Saturday morning a fortnight if you want a bit more in the bank. Most of our clients want the same cleaner each visit, so the rota settles into a steady fortnightly shape after a month or so. School-hours-only is fine. We work around primary school finishes in Hale, Murdishaw and Farnworth without a fuss.
Driving makes a real difference here. Sandymoor and Daresbury are awkward without a car, and so is the run between Widnes town and the WA8 9 estates. Town centre and Old Town jobs are walkable from the bus interchange. If you do drive, an older car is fine. There’s no Clean Air Zone in Halton borough at the moment.
One time-of-day quirk
Mersey Road in Widnes gets busy in the afternoons whenever the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre has a school visit in (Tuesday to Sunday term-time, 10am to 5pm by their published hours). We try not to book a 3pm finish on Mersey Road for that reason. Norton Priory’s car park gets the same treatment on summer weekends, Friday to Tuesday, when the museum’s open from 10 to 5.
What we want from you
- ✓You’ve cleaned before, professionally or to a properly serious standard at home. This is not a train-from-zero round.
- ✓You turn up. There’s a regional outfit that lost a stack of Widnes bookings to no-shows last autumn, and we picked them up. We do not intend to be them.
- ✓You’ll text the night before if a job needs to shift.
- ✓Right-to-work paperwork in order. ID and a recent utility bill at the first meeting is enough.
What we don’t ask for: a CV, a covering letter, or a long online form. We’d rather meet you in person.
How to apply
Message the number on this page with your name, the postcode you live in (WA7 or WA8 or wherever you’re commuting from), and one sentence on where you’ve cleaned before. We reply within 48 hours, usually faster. If we want to meet, we’ll book you in for a Wednesday or Thursday morning at a coffee place in Runcorn Old Town near the Silver Jubilee Bridge approach. Bring ID and a utility bill so we can do right-to-work properly. The whole thing takes about twenty minutes.
