Blackburn was a cotton mill town first, an east Lancashire market town second, and the housing stock you’ll be cleaning still tells you that story before you’ve even hung your coat up. We’re hiring a part-time domestic cleaner in Blackburn at £11 to £13 an hour, paid weekly on Fridays, with regular rounds across BB1, BB2 and BB3.
That sentence is the headline. The rest is small print and a few honest notes on the work in this town.
The three postcodes, plainly
BB1 wraps round the north and east of the town centre and stretches out to Rishton, Belthorn, Guide, Wilpshire and Clayton-le-Dale. BB2 covers the town centre itself and the western side, including the area around Witton Country Park and out toward Mellor. BB3 is Darwen and the patch south of the moors. Most of the rounds we book sit in BB1 and BB2 because that is where the bulk of the housing stock is. Darwen rounds we run a separate rota for and only at certain times of the week, because the Darwen Tower side of BB3 adds twenty minutes to a round day if you don’t plan it properly.
What the housing actually looks like
The terraces are the thing. The central wards of BB1 and BB2 are largely Victorian and Edwardian two-up-two-downs, the original mill workers’ housing, with stone flag floors in the back kitchen and a flagged ginnel behind. Cleaning these is straightforward but the floors take a while because flag stone shows every smear. Wilpshire, just up the A666, is mostly 1930s semis, bay windows, hall-stairs-and-landing carpet that needs hoovering more carefully than the brick-and-flag terraces. Whalley Range, west of the town centre, is a mix of newer modern estates and older Edwardian three-bedroom terraces, more ironing requests than average. Shadsworth, east, is the post-war estate Blackburn Corporation built in 1952, big through-lounges and three-piece suites that move when you hoover behind. Mellor and Mellor Brook out toward the Ribble are detached, larger floor area, longer visits and we charge the client more so the cleaner takes home more. We try to keep you in one or two of those housing types so you’re not jumping between a Mellor detached and a Audley terrace in the same morning.
Pay, plainly
£11 to £13 an hour. Where you sit on the band depends on three things: how far the round is from where you live, the property size, and whether the client is a regular fortnightly or a one-off. The flat £11 floor is above the National Living Wage of £12.71 only at the top of the band, so to be straight: a new starter on a short central terrace round will start at £11, but most of our regulars are on £12 or £13 within a few weeks. The Mellor and Wilpshire rounds sit at the top of the band because the floor area is bigger and the visit longer.

For comparison, Maid2Clean Blackburn list a starting customer rate of £18 an hour with their agency fee on top, and We Clean Homes advertise Blackburn cleans from £15 an hour to the customer. Those are what a household pays the agency, not the cleaner’s take-home. Our £11 to £13 is what lands in your bank account, no deductions, no agency cut, no card fees.
Getting around the town without losing an hour to traffic
Blackburn has one mainline station off Railway Road in BB1, on the Ribble Valley line and the Manchester to Clitheroe service, plus the Bolton-to-Blackburn line through Darwen. If you live in Accrington, Burnley, Rishton, Bolton, Darwen, Whalley or Clitheroe you can almost certainly reach a Blackburn round in under an hour by train. The buses out of the Boulevard Interchange next to the station cover the rest of the town. The 1 and 7 cover Wilpshire and the Whalley Road corridor north, the 6 runs to Shadsworth, and the 22 and 152 head south to Darwen. If you do drive, two practical things to know. First, on Blackburn Rovers home matchdays at Ewood Park (just off the A666 in BB2, capacity 31,367), the Bolton Road approach grinds for about an hour either side of kick-off, and we plan rounds clear of that. Second, the indoor Blackburn Market on Church Street trades 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday, and the streets behind the Mall (the shopping centre on Ainsworth Street, refurbished in 2010 with a £66m extension) get tight on Friday and Saturday mornings.
Where the end-of-tenancy work comes from
A meaningful share of our Blackburn bookings come through letting agents. Entwistle Green run a busy lettings book from their office on Sudell Cross on the fringes of the town centre and put a steady stream of BB1 and BB2 end-of-tenancies through us. Crown Estates and Letting Agents in BB2 cover a lot of the central HMO and student-adjacent stock. Your Move on King William Street pick up the rest. Those are tight-window jobs, usually a single day between tenants, sometimes a same-day turnaround when a check-out runs late. If you can do those days at short notice, say so when you apply.
A few Blackburn-specific things you’ll get used to
Blackburn Cathedral on Cathedral Close is one of the smaller English cathedrals, built originally as a parish church in 1826 and raised to cathedral status in 1926, and it holds Choral Evensong at 5pm on weekdays during term with the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys, which means a small but predictable bit of foot traffic at the top end of King William Street around teatime. The Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery on Museum Street is free and quiet during weekday mornings, useful if you have a long gap between two town-centre jobs. Corporation Park off Preston New Road in BB2, the big Victorian park up the hill from the town centre, is one of the routes we walk between Whalley Range jobs because the back gates come out on Granville Road. Witton Country Park on Preston Old Road, 480 acres, is the western edge of where our rounds reach. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal cuts through the north of the town and a small handful of our cleaners cycle along the towpath from Rishton in summer.

What we don’t ask for: a CV, a covering letter, references in triplicate.
