Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays the traders set up Romford Market in the square that’s been trading on the same patch since the royal charter of 1247, and those three days are the ones our Romford rota tries to avoid for the morning slots, because the parking around South Street and the Market Place is a write-off by 9am.
We’re hiring part-time domestic cleaners across the London Borough of Havering at £13 to £15 an hour, paid weekly, on regular rounds.
The patch covers RM1, RM2, RM3, RM4, RM5, RM6, RM7, RM11, RM12, RM13 and RM14.
That’s the headline. The rest is the actual shape of the work.
Where the Havering rota actually sits
Havering is far east outer London, and the housing stock here is older and more suburban than people who haven’t worked east of the North Circular tend to expect. The borough is built mostly out of inter-war semi-detached houses, with a few sharp pockets of something different bolted on.
Roughly half our Havering rota runs through the 1930s semis. Long ribbons of bay-fronted three-beds along the streets between Hornchurch and Elm Park, where the Elm Park Garden City development was opened by the Minister of Health on 18 May 1935 to coincide with the District line getting the infill station. Those houses have a particular layout the cleaners get used to fast: front room, back reception, kitchen extension, original Crittall windows on at least one elevation. The work is regular fortnightly maintenance for owner-occupier families, two to three hours a slot.
Another big chunk is in the mock-Tudor pocket of Hornchurch proper, around Emerson Park and the streets running off Butts Green Road and Ardleigh Green Road. Larger houses, more bedrooms, more floors. A few of those slots come in via Beresfords on Hornchurch High Street, who’ve been on the same patch since they opened the branch in 1983, and a handful via Balgores Lettings whose Romford office covers most of the borough. Both pay on time.
The Harold Hill post-war LCC estates and the streets around Collier Row make up about a fifth of the work. Smaller properties, mostly ex-council, often older clients on retainer. The rest is the modern flats coming out of the Liberty Romford redevelopment and the new blocks behind the station, where Hub Living and RivingtonHark have planning consent under reference P1573.25 for around 800 homes in towers up to 23 storeys, with the first 380 in phase one. We’ve started picking up flat handovers there as the early phases complete.
What it pays
£13 to £15 an hour, banded by experience and clean type. £13 is the entry rate for a first regular round if you’ve cleaned domestically before but haven’t run a paid round; £14 once you’ve stayed past the first month; £15 for the heavier end-of-tenancy and after-builders work, which mostly comes in around the new Romford flats and the higher-end Hornchurch addresses. Bank transfer every Friday, no exceptions.
For honest market context: the Romford customer-facing rates run around £18 an hour at Fantastic Services and Cleaning at Home for regular weekly slots, and £18.50 to £20 at Bright & Beautiful and a few of the smaller Hornchurch firms. We pay £13 to £15 because the rota is built on keeping cleaners for years, and the rate sits comfortably above the National Living Wage of £11.44 an hour.
Self-employed or PAYE, you choose. Both are fine.
Three Havering quirks worth knowing
- ✓Romford got the Elizabeth line on 24 May 2022, which has changed the morning commute for cleaners coming in from central London. Trains run from Romford through to Tottenham Court Road and Paddington, with the first westbound departure from Romford around 06:02 on weekdays. We use the Elizabeth line for nearly all our cleaners who don’t drive. From Stratford to Romford is around fifteen minutes.
- ✓Upminster is the eastern terminus of the District line and the easternmost station on the entire London Underground network. Trains physically cannot go any further east on the Tube, which means if you live further out than Upminster you’re on c2c (under public ownership again since 20 July 2025) or driving in. We have a small handful of Upminster slots on the streets around Station Road and Hall Lane that depend on cleaners who already commute that direction.
- ✓Hornchurch is on the District line between Elm Park and Upminster Bridge, two and a half kilometres from the Upminster terminus. The 256 bus from Hornchurch Tube down Suttons Lane towards St George’s Hospital connects most of our southern Hornchurch rota and the Hornchurch Country Park edge, which used to be RAF Hornchurch and is now 104.5 hectares of grassland and reed bed.
What we want from you
You’ll have cleaned before, properly. Domestic, end-of-tenancy or both. We are not training from zero on this round, because the older Hornchurch houses with original Crittall steel-frame windows and the after-builders work in the new Romford blocks both need someone who knows what they’re doing without being walked through it.
You’ll text the night before if a slot needs to move. The District line and Elizabeth line cover almost the whole borough, but a missed clean still has knock-on effects, and a late text is the difference between a polite reschedule and a customer who never books again.
You’ll turn up.
