How to remove red wine from carpet

Red wine is the stain people phone us about mid-party, and the good news is that fresh spills mostly come out with things already in your kitchen. The bad news is that the two best-known tips, salt and hot water, are the two that do lasting damage. Wine is a tannin stain; heat fixes tannin, and a mound of salt can set the colour while it shreds the pile. What works is dull: dilution and absorption, over and over, with cold water and a stack of white cloths.
Takes about 25 minutes, plus drying.
What you need
- Plain white cloths or kitchen roll, a stack of them
- Cold water
- Washing-up liquid (one teaspoon in 500ml of cold water)
- Optional: sparkling water
The steps
- Blot straight away, never rub. Press a dry white cloth into the stain and lift. Keep going with clean sections of cloth until almost nothing transfers. Rubbing pushes wine deeper into the pile and spreads the edge.
- Dilute with cold water. Pour a little cold or sparkling water onto the stain, then blot again. Repeat two or three times. You are flushing wine out, not washing it in, so small amounts and firm blotting.
- Work in the detergent solution. Mix a teaspoon of washing-up liquid into 500ml of cold water. Sponge it on with a white cloth, leave it two minutes, then blot dry.
- Repeat until the transfer stops. Alternate solution and blotting. Stop when no more pink lifts onto the cloth.
- Rinse and dry. Sponge with plain cold water to lift detergent residue, blot as dry as you can, then put a dry white cloth under a weight on the spot overnight.
What never to do
- Hot water: heat sets the tannin
- Salt: an old tip that can fix the colour and wreck the pile
- Scrubbing or coloured cloths
- Bleach or anything containing it on carpet
And the rule that outranks every stain: never mix cleaning products. Bleach combined with ammonia, or with vinegar or other acids, releases toxic gas. One product at a time, rinsing between.
A dried or week-old wine stain is a different opponent, and on wool carpet the margin for error shrinks fast. That is hot-water extraction territory, where the machine rinses and pulls rather than scrubs.
