How to get coffee stains out of carpet

Coffee looks dramatic on a pale carpet and behaves reasonably once you know its one trick: the milk. Black coffee is a tannin stain that dilutes out with cool water and detergent. Milky coffee adds protein, and protein cooks, so the moment hot water or a steam cleaner touches a latte spill you have scrambled it into the fibre. Keep everything cool and the method below handles both, including the pale tan shadow that likes to reappear as the carpet dries.

What you need

White cloths
Cool water
Washing-up liquid solution (a teaspoon in 500ml)
White vinegar solution (one part vinegar, two parts water), for the second pass only

The steps

Blot up everything you can. Fresh coffee lifts fast. Press white cloths in and keep swapping to dry sections until the transfer slows.
Cool water first. Pour on a little cool water and blot. This alone shifts most of a fresh spill. If the coffee had milk in it, stick to cool water throughout, because heat cooks milk protein into the fibre.
Detergent pass. Sponge on the washing-up liquid solution, wait two minutes, blot. Repeat while brown is still lifting.
Vinegar pass for the shadow. If a tan shadow remains, rinse the spot with plain water and blot first, then sponge on the vinegar solution, leave five minutes, and blot dry. One product at a time, always rinsing between.
Final rinse and dry. Plain water sponge, firm blot, dry cloth under a weight overnight.

And the rule that outranks every stain: never mix cleaning products. Bleach combined with ammonia, or with vinegar or other acids, releases toxic gas. One product at a time, rinsing between.

If the shadow keeps returning after drying, coffee has wicked up from the backing, and surface methods will keep chasing it. A proper extraction clean flushes the backing itself.
