Sofas punish enthusiasm. Where a carpet will forgive a generous slosh of cleaning solution, a fabric cushion holds water, dries slowly, and rewards you with a ring twice the size of the original coffee. The whole method below is built around that: find the care label before anything touches the fabric, and clean with foam rather than liquid so the filling never gets wet. Two minutes of reading a tag saves a reupholstery quote.

What you need
- White cloths
- Cool water
- Washing-up liquid
- A bowl for foam
The steps
- Find the care label first. Look for the cleaning code on the tag under the cushions. W means water-based cleaning is safe. S means solvent-only: stop here and call a professional, because water will mark it.
- Blot the spill. Dry white cloths, pressed in, swapped often. Get as much out as the cloth will take.
- Foam, not liquid. Whisk a teaspoon of washing-up liquid in a bowl of cool water and scoop up just the foam. Work the foam into the stain with a cloth. Foam cleans without soaking the cushion filling, and a soaked cushion is how water rings happen.
- Blot, repeat, stop early. Lift the foam off with a barely damp cloth, check, repeat once or twice. Fabric shows overworking faster than carpet, so stop as soon as the mark has gone.
- Dry it properly. Stand cushions on edge somewhere airy, out of direct sun. Do not put covers back until everything is bone dry.
What never to do
- Water on an S-code fabric
- Soaking the cushion through
- Hot water on milky coffee
- Scrubbing velvet or anything with a nap
And the rule that outranks every stain: never mix cleaning products. Bleach combined with ammonia, or with vinegar or other acids, releases toxic gas. One product at a time, rinsing between.
