How to remove ink from carpet

Ink is the stain where reaching for the wrong bottle does more damage than the stain itself. Water first on a biro mark spreads the oil-based ink outward; acetone dissolves some synthetic pile on contact. What works is isopropyl alcohol or surgical spirit, dabbed, and the discipline to test it somewhere invisible before it goes near the stain. Felt-tip, for what it is worth, is the easy one: water-based, and often gone after the detergent step alone.

The steps

Test somewhere hidden. Dab the alcohol on the carpet inside a cupboard or behind a door first. Wait a minute, check the cloth and the carpet. If colour comes up or the pile changes, stop and call a professional.
Dab, from the outside in. Wet a white cloth with the alcohol and dab the ink, starting at the edge and working inwards so you do not grow the stain. The ink should transfer to the cloth. Keep turning to clean sections.
Be patient with ballpoint. Ballpoint ink is oil-based and comes up in layers. Several light passes beat one heavy one. Felt-tip is water-based and often needs only the detergent step.
Detergent and rinse. Once no more ink transfers, sponge the spot with washing-up liquid solution, then plain water, blotting dry between.
Dry flat. Dry cloth, weight on top, leave it overnight.

What never to do

Water first on ballpoint: it spreads the oil

Flooding the spot with alcohol: it can break down the backing glue
Rubbing

And the rule that outranks every stain: never mix cleaning products. Bleach combined with ammonia, or with vinegar or other acids, releases toxic gas. One product at a time, rinsing between.
