How to remove chewing gum from carpet

Gum in carpet is a temperature problem wearing a stain costume. Warm, it stretches, smears and grips more pile the more you touch it. Frozen, it turns brittle and lets go almost politely. So the entire first half of this method is an ice bag and patience, and the golden rule is that the moment gum starts softening in your fingers, you stop and re-freeze rather than pull. The scissors stay in the drawer.

What you need

Ice cubes in a freezer bag
A blunt knife or bank card
Surgical spirit or isopropyl alcohol
White cloths

The steps

Freeze the gum hard. Ice bag on top, ten minutes, no shortcuts. Warm gum stretches and smears; frozen gum turns brittle and lets go.
Shatter and lift. Whack the frozen lump once with the back of a spoon, then pick and scrape the fragments out with the card. Re-freeze and repeat rather than pulling at softening gum.
Dissolve the last smear. Test surgical spirit on a hidden patch of carpet first. If safe, dab it on the residue with a white cloth; the smear transfers to the cloth in passes.
Rinse the spot. Washing-up liquid solution, then plain water, blotting dry between. Fluff the pile with your fingers once dry.

Pulling gum at room temperature

Untested solvents
Scissors, unless you have made peace with a bald spot

And the rule that outranks every stain: never mix cleaning products. Bleach combined with ammonia, or with vinegar or other acids, releases toxic gas. One product at a time, rinsing between.

Gum ground in by a chair leg, or a patch that has collected dirt for weeks, tends to leave a shadow after the lump is out. That shadow is a ten-minute job for an extraction machine.
