How to get candle wax out of carpet

Freeze it, snap it, lift the rest with brown paper and a cool iron. The one method where heat helps, used carefully.

Wax is the exception in stain work: the one where an iron earns its place. Everything else on this site says keep heat away, and then a candle tips over and the only way to lift wax out of pile is to melt it into something more absorbent than the carpet. The trick is doing that at the lowest possible temperature with paper in between, because synthetic pile melts not far above the point wax does. Freeze first, scrape second, iron last and gently.

What you need

Ice cubes in a freezer bag
A blunt knife or a bank card
Brown paper or a plain paper bag (no print)
An iron with the steam OFF, on its lowest setting

The steps

Freeze it solid. Sit the bag of ice on the wax for ten minutes. Hard, brittle wax snaps out of pile; soft wax smears through it.
Snap and scrape. Break the frozen wax up and scrape the pieces out with a blunt knife or card, then hoover the crumbs.
Lift the residue with paper and gentle heat. Lay plain brown paper over what is left and press the iron on for a few seconds at its lowest setting, steam off. The wax melts into the paper. Move to a clean patch of paper and repeat. Keep the iron moving and never let it touch the carpet: synthetic pile melts.
Deal with any colour left behind. Coloured candles can leave dye once the wax is gone. Sponge with washing-up liquid solution and blot; if the dye holds, it is a job for hot-water extraction.

Picking at warm wax
Solvents poured into the pile

And the rule that outranks every stain: never mix cleaning products. Bleach combined with ammonia, or with vinegar or other acids, releases toxic gas. One product at a time, rinsing between.

Coloured wax that has left dye behind, or wax trodden across a large area, is worth handing over. Extraction machines rinse dye out of pile in a way no iron and paper can.
