Most of our Chelmsford rounds are stitched into the gap between the 06:54 fast train into Liverpool Street and the 18:30 wave back. The fastest service does the run in around 29 minutes, so the houses we clean tend to belong to people who commute four or five days a week, and the cleaning rota fits the dead hours of the working day. We’re hiring a part-time domestic cleaner in Chelmsford at £12–£14 per hour, paid weekly, on fortnightly rounds across CM1, CM2 and CM3.

Where the work sits, by postcode
CM1 covers the city centre and the streets running north towards Springfield, plus a wedge of Writtle on the western edge. The housing here is a real mix: Edwardian villas around the Springfield Road / Arbour Lane stretch, modern flats above and behind the Bond Street redevelopment near John Lewis, and a band of post-war estates around Melbourne and Chignal. CM2 takes in Moulsham, Great Baddow, Galleywood and Sandon; the Moulsham Street side is mostly 1930s semis with the occasional Victorian terrace, while Galleywood has the premium detached stock at the Margaretting Road end. CM3 is the bigger geographic area for us, picking up Boreham, Hatfield Peverel, Danbury and a thin run out towards Maldon Road. CM3 jobs are not walkable from any rail station, so a car helps there.
Pay, in plain numbers
£12 to £14 an hour. Maintenance cleans for regular clients sit at the lower end. End-of-tenancy slots and deep-clean work, where the day runs longer and harder, sit at the top. Bank transfer every Friday for the previous Sunday-to-Saturday week.

We pay weekly because monthly is awful when you’re new and waiting on a first wage.
Mileage is 45p a mile if a single shift involves two of our jobs that aren’t walking distance. We don’t ask you to bring your own vacuum.
Who we want
You’ll have cleaned before, properly. Either through an agency or a serious domestic run, and you’ll be comfortable on your own in a stranger’s flat for two or three hours at a stretch.
- ✓You drive, or you live near enough to Chelmsford station that the central CM1 and Moulsham rounds are reachable on foot or by bus. The CM3 rota and the Galleywood end of CM2 are awkward without a car, especially after the early-evening bus thins out.
- ✓You’re free at least three weekday mornings a week. The 09:30 to 14:30 window is the busiest because clients are out and want the flat or house quiet again before the school pickup or the train back.
- ✓You text the night before if a job needs to move. We send the rota by Sunday evening for the week ahead.
What we don’t want: a CV, a covering letter, references on headed paper, or a long online application form.
Hyperlocal stuff that matters on a shift
The first weekday train from Chelmsford station to Liverpool Street goes around 05:11 and the last one back leaves Liverpool Street at 23:23 ish, with up to five trains an hour at peak. Useful if you’re stitching a Chelmsford morning onto a London afternoon round, or the other way. The fast service stops at Stratford and Shenfield only, then runs through.
Bond Street, the riverside scheme that opened in 2016 anchored by John Lewis, sets the trading rhythm in CM1. Most of the shops there run roughly 09:30 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday and a shorter Sunday window of about 11:00 to 17:00, so deliveries clog the access roads off Springfield Road early morning. We try not to put a Bond Street-area job on a shift earlier than 09:30. Hylands Park sits on the south-western edge of the city; the late-June State Fayre weekend pulls major traffic across CM1 and CM2 and we shuffle the rota around it. Hylands hosted V Festival for years, which the city remembers, and the new festival cycle has the same effect on parking near Writtle.
Anglia Ruskin’s Chelmsford campus on Bishop Hall Lane in CM1 1SQ generates a steady end-of-tenancy run in late June and early July as student lets cycle. We pick up two or three of those a week. The site that became the world’s first purpose-built radio factory, Marconi’s New Street Works, where the Dame Nellie Melba broadcast went out on 15 June 1920, is now part of the residential redevelopment running between New Street and Henry Road. Chelmsford has resident parking permit zones across a fair chunk of CM1 and CM2; visitor permits are MiPermit-based and we share a code where the client pays. If a job sits in a permit street, we’ll tell you which side of the road and which end is easier. Cathedral parking, near the Cathedral Church of St Mary the Virgin on New Street, is metered and not worth it for a regular maintenance job; we prefer the side streets off Duke Street.
Competition, briefly
The Maid Service, trading since 1987 from Chelmsford, is the longest-running independent in the city and a fair benchmark on rates. SelClene also work the area on the agency model, and Bright & Beautiful run a directly-employed cleaner model out of Chelmsford. We pay our cleaners between those, on a flat hourly rate with no management deduction taken out of your hours, and we keep the same cleaner on the same job for as long as both sides are happy. Our turnover is low for that reason.
On the letting-agent side we’ve sent end-of-tenancy slots through CM Rent & Sales on Duke Street and Beaulieu Estates on Moulsham Street; both run heavier in late August into early September when the local rental market shifts.
