How hot-water extraction works
Hot-water extraction is the method most carpet manufacturers ask for in their own care guides, and it is what we use on nearly every job. The shorthand name people use is steam cleaning, though it is not really steam.
It runs in three steps. First we spray a pre-treatment over the carpet and let it sit for a few minutes, which breaks down the oily film that holds dirt to the fibre. Then the machine does the work: it injects heated water deep into the pile under pressure and, in the very same stroke, sucks that water back out along with the loosened soil, repeating the pass until what comes up runs clear. Last comes a mild acidic rinse that drops the pile back to roughly neutral so there is nothing sticky left to grab dust next week.
That last step is the one cheaper outfits skip. Leave detergent in a carpet and it turns into a magnet, so the carpet looks filthy again within a fortnight and you blame the cleaner. We would rather spend the extra ten minutes rinsing.
Drying takes three to six hours in most rooms. Warmth and moving air speed it up, so we will often crack a window and suggest you leave the heating on low.
Chelmsford carpets and very hard water

Rugs, stairs and the awkward jobs
Stairs are fiddly and we have priced them honestly. A single flight is £41, because edging each tread and getting the machine into the corners takes time a flat floor does not. The Victorian terraces around Grove Road and Hamlet Road tend to have one steep straight flight; the newer houses out at Chelmer Village often have a turn and a half-landing, which we still count as one flight unless it is unusually long.
