The cobbled High Street in Guildford is closed to most traffic between 6.30am and 6pm Monday to Saturday, which sounds trivial until you’ve tried to drop a vacuum off near Tunsgate at 9am on a Tuesday. Most of our town-centre rounds work around that. So when we say we’re looking for a part-time cleaner who knows GU1 to GU4, we mean someone who already plans their day around the setts, the controlled parking zone, and the fact that the river squeezes the road network into about three usable bridges.
We’re hiring a part-time domestic cleaner in Guildford at £13–£15 per hour, paid weekly by bank transfer, for regular fortnightly visits across GU1, GU2, GU3 and GU4.
That sentence is the answer to the question most cleaners ask first. The rest is the texture.
The work, in plain terms
Most of the rota is maintenance cleans in private homes. The housing stock varies more than people realise: Tudorbethan cottages up around the Mount, Victorian artisan terraces in Charlotteville (the Henry Peak streets off Addison Road), 1930s semis in Onslow Village, modern flats clustered around the station and North Street, and the larger detached houses out in Wood Street, Worplesdon and the GU3 villages. We also pick up a steady trickle of end-of-tenancy cleans through letting agents on the High Street. Howard Morley & Sons, who’ve let from their flagship office on the High Street since 1960, send us flat handovers most months; Seymours over near the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre push us a couple a week in term time.
What we pay and why this rate
£13 an hour is the floor for new starters with proven domestic experience. £15 is what we pay once you’re a year in and clients are asking for you by name. We sit above the Surrey market median and a fair bit above what Well Polished pay their cleaners locally (their published rate is around £11). We pay weekly because monthly is awful when you’ve just started and the rent is due.
Travel is paid between back-to-back jobs. Mileage at HMRC rates if you drive.
Who this suits
You’ve cleaned before. Properly. Either through an agency or steady private clients for at least a year. We don’t run a training programme this round, so if you’re brand new to domestic work we’re not the right shop yet.
You can get to jobs across the borough. Plenty of our cleaners don’t drive and stitch the day together with the bus and the Park & Ride; that works for the rounds inside town and for Burpham, but the outlying villages around GU3 (Worplesdon, Pirbright edge) are tough without a car. Be honest with us about that on the first call so we can give you a sensible rota.
You’ll text the night before if a job needs to move. Not the morning of.
A few Guildford-specific things
The High Street pedestrianisation runs Monday to Saturday 6.30am to 6pm and Sunday 11.30am to 5pm. Surrey County Council moved the parking permits to a virtual system in March 2025, which is fine once you’re set up but takes about ten minutes the first time. We sort the permit codes for clients who pay for them. Stag Hill, around the Cathedral and the University, is its own beast on concert weekends; if you’ve been near the place on a 2026 Coffee Concert Saturday or that 00s Silent Disco weekend in August you’ll know to leave earlier.
Trains matter for some clients. The fast service to Waterloo is about 32 minutes, so we do see a fair number of London commuters who want the flat ready before they walk back from the station at 6.30pm. We try to book those rounds for late afternoon.
