This is the one we point most people at when a spray is not enough. Spray or machine: which upholstery cleaner do you actually need?
This is the question that decides everything, and it comes down to how much you spill and what you are spilling.
- A spray is cheap, instant and lives under the sink. You spray the mark, work it, and blot it out by hand. It is perfect for the odd coffee splash or a wine ring, and useless as a way to deep-clean a whole sofa.
- A spot machine costs ten to fifty times more and needs a cupboard. In return it sprays solution into the fabric and vacuums the dirty water back out, so it lifts grime up from deep in the cushion rather than smearing it around the surface.
- Pets and kids tip the maths toward a machine. If you are cleaning accidents and ground-in mess most weeks, the suction pays for itself in results. For a calm household with the occasional spill, a couple of sprays is plenty.
Neither is a deep clean in the way a professional hot-water extraction is. They keep a sofa fresh between proper cleans. They do not replace one.

Check your sofa’s cleaning code first
