Why Essex water is the real problem
This matters more in Essex than almost anywhere we work, so it goes near the top rather than buried at the bottom. The county sits on chalk and clay, and as rainwater filters down through it the supply picks up calcium and magnesium, which is why Essex and Suffolk Water runs so hard here. How hot-water extraction works
Hot-water extraction is the proper term for what nearly everyone calls steam cleaning. The machine forces heated water and a measured amount of solution down into the pile under pressure, agitates the fibres so the dirt lets go, then drags almost all of it straight back out with powerful suction. The grit that has worked its way down to the backing comes up with the water. That last step, the pulling-back-out, is exactly the part a cheap job rushes.
Why we stick with it over dry compounds: extraction actually reaches the bottom of the pile. A sprinkle-and-vacuum dry clean tidies the top half-inch you can see and leaves the embedded grit sitting underneath, and that grit is what saws through the fibres and wears a carpet out years early. Extraction takes it away.
Drying is the honest trade-off, so here is the truth of it. A properly extracted carpet is left damp rather than wet, and in a warm room with a window on the latch you can walk on it within a couple of hours and it is bone dry by the following morning. We deliberately over-extract on the last pass so you are never stuck with a soggy floor for two days, and through an Essex winter we will bring an air mover for the rooms that need the push.
Essex homes and the carpets in them
Essex is mixed stock, and the carpet job changes street by street. Stairs are a job in their own right. A flight is £41 because it is slow work on your knees with the hand tool, getting right into the gripper edges and the nosing where all the dirt gathers. We will not call a staircase “a little room”, undercharge for it, and then skimp on the time it actually needs.
