How hot-water extraction works
Hot-water extraction is the method most people loosely call steam cleaning, though steam is not really what is happening. Heated water and a cleaning solution go into the carpet under pressure. The pile gets agitated so the dirt lets go of the fibres. Then a powerful vacuum hauls the water, the solution and the loosened soil straight back out into a tank on the machine. The carpet comes out damp, and the dirt comes out with the water.
That final step is the whole game. A cheap bonnet clean, or a machine hired from the supermarket for an afternoon, tends to leave detergent sitting in the base of the pile. Detergent is sticky. Sticky carpet catches the next fortnight of grit and dust, and the room is grey again almost as soon as it has dried. A proper rinse and a strong extraction are exactly what stop that happening.

The hard-water problem in Hertfordshire
Here is the local reason the rinse matters more in this county than in a soft-water part of the country. Hertfordshire sits on chalk. The water comes through Affinity Water, drawn mostly from the Chiltern chalk aquifers and the rivers Lee and Colne, and it is some of the hardest in Britain. St Albans, Watford and Luton turn up again and again on the lists of the hardest-water towns in the country.
Hard water is loaded with dissolved chalk. Clean a carpet with untreated tap water and fail to rinse it back out, and that mineral stays behind in the pile. The carpet dries stiff, looks dull, and can carry a faint pale bloom across it like a film of dust that will not brush off. We know the water we are working with, so we mix for it and we extract hard, and the carpet dries soft underfoot instead of crisp.
You feel the difference with bare feet. That is the test.
Drying normally takes a few hours with a window open and the heating on a low tick. By the evening you can usually pad about on it in socks. We will never pretend it is bone dry in twenty minutes, because that promise is precisely how people end up with a carpet that was never really cleaned to begin with, just wetted and left.
Garden cities, new towns and old terraces
Hertfordshire is not one kind of house, and the carpets in it have not lived one kind of life. The county has a genuinely unusual spread of housing, and it changes what a carpet has been put through.
Some of it is famous. Welwyn Garden City was laid out from 1920 as the second garden city in England, Ebenezer Howard’s follow-up to Letchworth up the line. And then the old stuff. St Albans has streets of Victorian terraces, Fleetville near the station among them, the kind of long narrow houses with a steep flight of stairs nobody has had cleaned in living memory.
