How we actually clean a carpet
We use hot-water extraction. People still call it steam cleaning, and the name is close enough, though there is no steam involved in the way a kettle makes it.
The order matters more than the kit. First we vacuum, because no machine on earth cleans dry grit out of a pile and you do not want to turn dry soil into mud. Then we pre-spray the carpet and give the solution a few minutes to break the bond between the dirt and the fibre. Then the extraction head goes over it, pushing heated water and solution into the pile under pressure and pulling almost all of it straight back out, along with the soil it has loosened.
The order matters more than the kit.
That last part is the bit that matters for your floor. A rinse that does not come back out is a carpet left wet, and a carpet left wet is a carpet that wicks brown marks back to the surface as it dries and smells musty for a week. So we set the machine to lift more water than it leaves, which is why a carpet we have done is damp to the touch, not soaked, and why it is usually walkable in socks within a few hours rather than the next day.
We do not use the spin-bonnet pads some firms favour for a quick lobby clean. They polish the top of the pile and leave the bottom of it dirty. For a home carpet that you actually live on, extraction is the method that reaches the base of the fibre where the grit and the skin and the pet dander collect. It costs us more time. Berkshire carpets, street by street
Reading is a Victorian railway town, and the housing tells you so the moment you start lifting furniture. The terraces in Newtown and around Cemetery Junction went up between the 1880s and the early 1900s, and their long, narrow rooms run a single carpet from bay window to back wall. Caversham and Emmer Green, over the river, lean Edwardian and inter-war, with bigger reception rooms and the wide landings that eat stair carpet. The hard-water problem
Berkshire has some of the hardest water in the country. The county sits on chalk, the rain soaks through it and dissolves the calcium on the way down, and what comes out of the tap in Reading regularly tests above 300 parts per million.
