How hot-water extraction works
Hot-water extraction is the proper name for what most people call steam cleaning. The machine pushes heated water and a measured dose of solution down into the pile under pressure, agitates the fibres, then pulls almost all of it back out again with strong suction. A vacuum never reaches the bottom of the pile. The dirt sitting at the base of the carpet lifts out with the water. That return pass is the step a cheap job rushes or skips altogether.
We pick it over dry compounds for one plain reason. Extraction reaches the bottom of the pile. A sprinkle-and-vacuum dry clean freshens the surface you can see and leaves the embedded grit behind, and grit is what grinds a carpet thin and bald over time. Extraction lifts that grit out of the carpet for real.

The honest downside is drying time. A properly extracted carpet is left damp rather than soaked, and in a warm room with a window cracked open it is fine to walk on in a couple of hours and bone dry by morning. We run an extra dry pass at the end so you are not stranded on a wet floor for two days, and through a cold, wet Surrey winter we bring an air mover for the rooms that are slow to give up the moisture.
Surrey homes and the rental churn
Surrey rents heavily, and that is what keeps us busy. A huge slice of the county commutes into London, the trains from Woking and Guildford reach Waterloo in around half an hour, Epsom is roughly thirty-six minutes in, and that pull drives a constant turnover of tenants moving in and out of flats and houses. The stock shifts town by town. Epsom and Ewell are full of leafy roads of Edwardian and 1920s and 1930s semis, where the front-room carpet is often the one the previous owner laid and the stair runner has taken decades of feet. Reigate has a good run of period houses near the centre. Redhill and parts of Woking lean toward post-war and modern estate housing, brick-and-block semis with hard-wearing pile that scrubs up well. The town centres of Woking, Guildford and Staines carry the new-build flats, mostly let, where we run a steady round of move-out cleans.
Then there is the older, pricier end. The big detached houses up on the wooded slopes of the so-called stockbroker belt, around Cobham, Esher and the Surrey Hills, tend to have wool carpets, and wool wants a cooler, gentler clean than the tough polypropylene in a Redhill new-build. Why Surrey water makes a difference
This matters more than people expect across Surrey. Much of the county sits on chalk and clay, the North Downs run right through it, and as rain soaks through that ground it picks up calcium and magnesium, so the mains supply runs genuinely hard, commonly 250 parts per million and often well north of that. Down the east of the county the supplier is SES Water; over the Guildford side it is Thames Water; the chalk gives you the same hard result either way.
Hard water is perfectly fine to drink. It is a nuisance for carpets, though, because when a rushed operator leaves detergent in the pile, the mineral-heavy residue sets, attracts dirt back to it, and the carpet looks grubby again within weeks. The owner blames the carpet. It was the rinse.
We get around it two ways. We meter the solution carefully so there is less to rinse out in the first place. And the final extraction pass is a clean-water rinse that lifts the loosened detergent instead of burying it deeper. There is nothing clever in that. It is just the extra pass a hurried outfit cannot be bothered to make.

Rugs, stairs and stubborn marks
Stairs are a job of their own. A flight is £41 because it is slow work down on your knees with the hand tool, getting into the gripper edges and the front lip of every tread where the muck packs hardest. We do not log a staircase as a small room, undercharge for it, then bolt through.

Pet accidents, coffee, red wine, the usual suspects: flag them when you book so we bring the right pre-treatment. We are honest about what comes out and what does not. An old dye stain set into a pale carpet may fade rather than vanish, and we would sooner say that on the phone than spring it on you at the door.
