How we actually clean a carpet
The method is hot-water extraction. Loads of people call it steam cleaning, even though there is barely any steam to see, which always lets down the folk picturing a kettle and a cloud. Here is what really happens on the day.
We vacuum first. A slow, proper vacuum, because dry grit lifts out far more easily before it gets wet, and skipping this step is exactly why a rushed cheap clean ends up pushing mud around. Next we lay down a pre-spray matched to the fibre and to how dirty the carpet is, and we let it sit. That few minutes of dwell time is where the dirt actually lets go of the pile. Hurry it and you are only wetting the floor.
Then the machine does the work. Hot water goes in under pressure and comes straight back out, carrying the loosened soil with it, while a powerful vacuum drags most of the moisture back so the pile is left damp rather than swimming. On the worn lanes, the grey track a hundred trips to the front door leaves down a hallway, we pass twice and groom the pile so it dries standing up instead of matted flat.

Stains, and what we will not promise

Drying times and the bit after
