Why Slough water changes the job
Slough sits in the Affinity Water supply area, fed from the chalk under the Chilterns, and that water is hard. Properly hard, around 250 to 350 milligrams of calcium carbonate a litre, which is among the hardest supplied anywhere in the country. How hot-water extraction works
People call it steam cleaning. It is not steam exactly, it is hot water under pressure, but the name has stuck so we will not be precious about it.
The cleaner vacuums the carpet dry first, because pulling the loose grit out before any water goes down stops it turning to mud in the pile. Then we pre-treat the traffic lanes and any marked spots and give them a few minutes to break down. The machine then injects hot water deep into the carpet and pulls it straight back out in the same pass, taking the loosened dirt, the old detergent and the hard-water residue with it. We groom the pile so it dries standing the right way.
Drying time depends on the carpet and the day. A short-pile bedroom can be touch-dry in two to three hours. A thick wool lounge carpet on a damp January afternoon takes longer, and if you crack a window and leave the heating ticking over it speeds up. We never soak a carpet so wet you could wring it out. Over-wetting is how careless operators cause shrinkage and that brown wicking mark, and we would rather do the job properly.

The carpets we see around Slough
