How hot-water extraction works
Hot-water extraction is the method most people still call steam cleaning, though it is not really steam. The machine pushes hot water and a cleaning solution down into the pile under pressure, loosens the soil that is bound to the base of each fibre, then sucks the dirty water straight back out. The grit that dulls your carpet leaves the room in our tank. It does not get pushed around or left behind to dry into the backing.
That last part is the whole point, and it is where the cheap jobs fall down. A bonnet mop or a tub of supermarket shampoo will brighten the very top of the pile for a fortnight. Then the residue they leave behind starts grabbing fresh dirt, and the carpet greys up faster than it did before you touched it. Extraction rinses the residue out instead of adding to it.
