How we actually clean the carpet
We use hot-water extraction. People still call it steam cleaning, though it is not really steam.
The job runs in a set order. First we go over the carpet to lift the loose grit, because wetting dry dirt just turns it to mud in the pile. Then we pre-treat, working a cleaning solution into the fibres and giving it a few minutes to break down the greasy stuff that holds dirt in place. Then the machine goes on, pushing hot water through the carpet under pressure and pulling almost all of it straight back out in the same pass, and that last part is the bit that matters, because a carpet that gets soaked and left wet is a carpet that smells worse a week later than it did before you started.

The reason we bother with extraction rather than the cheap bonnet method is simple. Bonnet cleaning drags a damp pad over the top of the carpet. It makes the surface look better for about a fortnight, then the dirt that was pushed down comes back up. Extraction pulls the dirt out of the carpet and into the machine. It is more work and it is slower, and it is the only method that actually leaves a carpet clean.
Most of the carpets in the older Haringey houses are wool or a wool mix. Wool takes hot-water extraction well as long as you do not drown it, which is exactly why we control the water going in and pull the moisture back out instead of leaving it to soak through to the backing.
Haringey carpets, and why they grey up
Two things age a carpet in this borough faster than people expect, and both are worth knowing before you book.
The first is foot traffic off the street. A lot of the Wood Green flats sit right on the High Road or a few doors off it, on the Piccadilly line at Wood Green and Turnpike Lane, and that means grit. Every shoe carries a little of the pavement in, and grit is abrasive, so it does more than dirty a carpet, it wears the fibres down where you walk most. The hallway and the bottom of the stairs go first. By the time the middle of a room looks tired, the threshold by the front door is usually already grey.
The second is the water. Haringey sits over a chalk aquifer that runs up through the Lee Valley, and Thames Water reckons the supply here is very hard, around 280 milligrams a litre. Hard water is brilliant at leaving deposits behind. When a carpet has been cleaned badly before, with too much water and a soapy product that was never rinsed out, those minerals and that leftover detergent stay in the pile and actually attract dirt. The carpet then re-soils faster than it should. Part of what proper extraction does is rinse that residue out.
The houses themselves tell you what to expect underfoot. The Noel Park estate, built by the Artisans, Labourers and General Dwellings Company from the 1880s and a conservation area since 1882, is rows of small red-brick cottages with the original room sizes mostly intact, so the carpets are smaller, squarer, and heavily walked. The Edwardian semis up towards Turnpike Lane and Bounds Green have bigger front rooms and bay windows where the light shows every mark. The 1930s semis out at the edges are boxier again. Stairs, rugs and the awkward bits
Stairs are the hardest part of any carpet job. They take the most traffic, they are fiddly to clean evenly, and in the tall Noel Park and Hornsey terraces there can be two flights between the front door and the top bedroom. Pet marks are their own job. A cat or dog accident does not sit on top of the carpet, it soaks down into the backing and sometimes into the underlay, which is why a quick surface scrub never fixes the smell.
