How hot-water extraction works
People call it steam cleaning. It is not really steam. Hot-water extraction sprays heated water and a cleaning solution into the carpet under pressure, agitates the pile, then a powerful vacuum pulls the water straight back out along with the dirt it has lifted. The carpet comes up damp, not soaked, because the extraction stroke takes most of the moisture away with it.
That last part matters more than anything. A cheap hired machine, or a wet shampoo, leaves the carpet wet and leaves detergent behind in the pile. Detergent is sticky. It dries into the fibres and then grabs every speck of dust off your shoes for the next month. A DIY clean often looks worse three weeks later than it did before. We adjust the machine for the carpet. A tough nylon in a hallway can take more heat and a firmer pass. A wool twist, common in the older mansion flats around Clapton Common, gets cooler water, a gentler solution and a careful eye on how wet it gets, because wool will shrink and the natural fibres felt if you drown them. We would rather do two patient passes than one heavy one.

Hackney carpets and hard water
Hackney sits in a hard water zone. Thames Water supplies the borough at roughly 325 parts per million of dissolved minerals, which is among the hardest in London. You notice it on the kettle and the showerhead, but it works on carpets too, in a quieter way.
When a wet patch dries on a carpet here, whether it is a spilled drink, a pet accident or a leak from the flat upstairs, the minerals in the water are left behind in the pile as the moisture goes. That hard, faintly crunchy feel a old stain gets is partly mineral. Old bleach splashes have removed the dye and there is no colour to bring back, and some dyes from cheap rugs bleed into a pale carpet permanently. Rugs, stairs and the awkward bits
Stairs are fiddly and we price them honestly at £41 a flight. The carpet wraps the nosing and the dirt collects on the front edge of each tread, so a flight is slow, careful work on your knees, not a quick once-over. A maisonette with two flights is two flights.
Rugs we treat on their own merits. The £35 rate covers a rug up to two square metres; over that it is £51. Wool kilims, viscose rugs that mark if you look at them, jute that must not get too wet, and the flatweaves everyone buys for the front room all behave differently, and we match the method to the material. A good rug is worth cleaning rather than binning.
Some things we will not pretend to fix. Carpet that has lifted off its gripper, splits at the seams, and water damage that has already gone mouldy underneath are repair or replacement jobs, not cleaning jobs. We would rather point you straight than take money for a clean that cannot work.
