How we actually clean a carpet
The method is hot-water extraction. Half the people who ring call it steam cleaning, and there is barely any steam in it, which always lets down the ones picturing a kettle on the landing. Here is the run of it, in order.
First we vacuum. A slow, proper vacuum, because dry grit lifts out far more easily before it gets wet, and skipping it is one of the big reasons a cheap clean smears mud about instead of lifting it. Then a pre-spray goes down, matched to the fibre and how dirty the carpet is, left a few minutes to work. That waiting time is where the soil actually loosens. Rush it and you are only wetting the floor.
Then the machine. Hot water goes in under pressure and comes straight back up, carrying the loosened dirt with it, while a powerful vacuum pulls most of the moisture out so the pile is left damp rather than soaked. On the worn channels, the grey lanes that a thousand trips to the front door grind into a hall, we go over them twice and groom the pile so it dries standing up instead of pressed flat.

The carpets we meet around Enfield
Enfield is not one kind of home, and the carpets give the game away. Three jobs come round again and again, and each one wants handling a little differently.
The first is the inter-war semi. When the farms and old estates were sold off in the 1920s and 1930s, the builders threw up street after street of bay-fronted semi-detached houses, and Enfield has them in their thousands, out through Bush Hill Park, Grange Park and Lavender Hill. The third is the EN3 flat. The newer blocks and ex-council maisonettes out toward Ponders End and Enfield Lock, and the conversions above the shops in town: lighter, newer carpets, owners who want them kept that way. A pale wool-mix shows every coffee ring, so these are about staying ahead of the wear rather than rescuing a disaster.
One local thing is worth flagging. Hertford Road carries heavy traffic all day, and the buses, the 191 and the 313 among them, idle and pull away at the stops from dawn, so the flats fronting the road pick up a fine sooty film by the windows and across the first stretch of hall. It is not your imagination. We see it on the mats and the first metre of carpet, and a hot extraction lifts it once it is in the pile.
Hard water, and why it matters here
Enfield sits on hard water. The supply here comes through Affinity Water rather than Thames, and the hardness runs at roughly 290 parts per million, which is high. You will know it already from the state of the kettle.
It matters more than people expect. If a cleaner mixes a strong solution into hard water and then fails to rinse it back out, the minerals and leftover detergent dry into a stiff, chalky residue deep in the pile. That residue feels faintly crunchy underfoot, and worse, it is sticky at a level you cannot see, so the carpet pulls in fresh dirt and looks grubby again within weeks. A clean that goes off fast is nearly always a rinsing problem, not a dirt problem.
So we mix to suit the water and we rinse hard. The last passes with the machine are clear water under pressure, dragging the solution back out instead of leaving it to set. It is the dull part of the job. It is also the part that keeps an Enfield carpet clean once we have gone.
Stains, and what we will not promise
This is where most carpet cleaners oversell, and we try hard not to. A stain and general dirt are two different problems. Overall soiling, worn traffic lanes, a tired grey look across the whole floor: that comes up well nearly every time. Drying times and what to do after
