This is the bit most carpet adverts leave out, and it matters more in Harrow than in a lot of London. The water here is very hard. So we do the opposite. We use less detergent, not more, and we spend the time on the rinse-and-extract pass that pulls the cleaning solution back out of the pile. How we actually clean a carpet
Hot-water extraction. That is the method.
It still gets called steam cleaning by most people, and the name does not really matter, but the steps do. First we vacuum, properly, because loose grit is most of what is in a carpet and you want it gone before any water touches it. Then we pre-treat the traffic lanes and any specific marks, the spot by the sofa where the mugs land, the patch inside the front door, and we give that a few minutes to break the soil down. Then the machine goes over it with hot water and a measured amount of detergent, working it into the base of the pile, and on the same pass it sucks the dirty water straight back out under strong suction, which is the part that actually carries the soil away and leaves the pile damp instead of wet.
We groom the pile so it dries standing up rather than matted. Then we tell you the truth about drying time. Four to six hours in normal weather, longer if it is a cold damp January and the windows are shut. Crack a window or run a fan and you will be back on it in socks by the evening.
What we will not do is promise that everything vanishes. Ground-in soil and the grey lane down the middle of a room come up well. Most spills lift if they have not been scrubbed to death first.
