Hot-water extraction is the proper term for what most people call steam cleaning. The machine drives heated water and a measured dose of solution down into the pile under pressure, works the fibres, then draws nearly all of it straight back out with strong suction. The dirt that has settled at the base of the carpet, the part a vacuum never reaches, comes up with the water. That return pass is the step a cheap job hurries through or skips.
We use it instead of dry compounds for one plain reason. Extraction gets to the bottom of the pile. A sprinkle-and-vacuum dry clean tidies the surface you can see and abandons the ground-in grit underneath, and grit is what wears a carpet bald from below. Extraction takes that grit out.
