There are two Windsors, and they wear their carpets differently. How we actually clean a carpet
The method is hot-water extraction. Most people call it steam cleaning, even though there is next to no steam in it. Here is what really happens once we are through your door.
We vacuum first, slowly and properly, because dry grit lifts away far more easily before it gets wet, and skipping that step is how a rushed job grinds mud down into the pile. Then we put down a pre-spray, picked to suit the fibre and how dirty the carpet honestly is, and leave it to work. Those few minutes of dwell time are where the soil lets go. Rush it and all you have done is wet the floor.
Then comes the machine. Hot water goes down into the pile under pressure and is drawn straight back out on the same stroke, lifting the loosened dirt with it, while a strong vacuum pulls most of the moisture so the carpet is left damp rather than soaked. On the worn lanes, those grey channels tramped into a hall by years of trips to the front door, we go over a second time and groom the pile so it dries standing up rather than flat and matted.

Drying, and what to do afterwards
A carpet that has been extracted properly is damp, not wet. Most rooms are fine to walk on within a few hours and properly dry inside about half a day. Wool and thick pile hold more water and take longer. A cold flat shut up in February dries slower than the same flat in June with a window open.
Open a window if you can, and a fan aimed across the floor speeds the whole thing along no end. Keep shoes off until it is dry, and if you must cross a damp carpet, wear clean socks, because bare feet leave oils that turn into fresh marks. We slip little foam blocks under furniture legs so a drying carpet cannot pick up rust or a stain off the wood.

This is where a lot of carpet cleaners oversell, and we try hard not to. A stain and general dirt are two different problems. Some things shift most of the time. Mud off the Long Walk, tea, food, washable drinks, everyday grime. Others dig in and fight you: dried red wine, old pet accidents soaked down into the underlay, dye creeping out of a cheap rug, anything with bleach in it that has already pulled the colour out of the pile. Bleach by that point is not really a stain at all. It is missing carpet, and no machine on earth puts the colour back.
