The van dip-tank, and why we skip caustic
The real graft happens in a heated tank out in the van, not on your worktop. We lift out the shelves, the side runners, the inner door glass and any panel that comes away, and they go in to soak while the cavity, the rubber seal and the fan housing get cleaned by hand. The tank runs a non-caustic dip-tank solution, not the caustic soda a handful of firms round here still swear by.
Does the difference matter? It does, for two flat reasons. Caustic bites into aluminium trim and dulls vitreous enamel a little more each time it is used, and it leaves a smell that clings to the kitchen. Our solution floats the baked carbon off the metal without attacking it, which is the whole reason you can switch the oven on and cook the same evening.

One exception, and it is an important one. Catalytic and self-cleaning liner panels, the rough ones in the back and sides of some ovens, must never be scrubbed or dipped, or the coating that does the self-cleaning is wrecked. We leave them be and work around them. A quick word at the door about what your oven has saves a ruined panel and a sour mood all round.
Affinity Water, hard water and oven glass
Windsor sits on chalk, and the supply Affinity Water draws here is hard, usually somewhere between 250 and 350 parts per million of calcium carbonate. You see it on the kettle and the shower screen, and you see it on the inside of the oven door, where a white haze settles under the grease and a normal clean walks straight past it.
We take that limescale film off the door glass on every single oven we do, which is exactly why the glass comes up clearer than any weekend scrub at home leaves it. It is also why the steam-clean cycle on newer ovens never quite gets there in this town. The mineral load is simply too high. The steam loosens the surface grease and stops, and people ring us anyway once they have run the cycle twice and seen no real change.
Hard water is the local quirk that costs a Windsor oven the most. We deal with it as a matter of course.
Hobs, extractors, microwaves, ranges and AGAs
People nearly always book the oven first, then add the hob the moment they notice it looks far worse sat next to a clean oven than it did five minutes earlier. Gas hobs take longer than ceramic. The burner caps, the crowns and the cast trivets all lift off into the tank and go back on clean and seated properly, so the flame burns even again instead of leaning to one side.
The extractor is the part almost everyone forgets, and a grease filter over a hob in daily use turns into a solid sticky mat that is a real fire risk as much as a smell. We degrease the metal mesh filters and wipe the canopy down. Carbon filters in recirculating hoods are usually a replace-not-clean part, so we check yours and tell you honestly whether it is worth keeping. If your hood ducts out through the wall, that is one less worry.
The microwave at £22 is the quiet bargain. Out comes the turntable and the roller ring, and we get at the splatter baked onto the inside roof that the daily wipe never reaches.
Ranges and AGAs deserve a line of their own, because Windsor has more of both than a town this size has any right to. A 90cm range cooker has two cavities, a wider grill and a great deal more glass, which is why it is £114 rather than the £110 a standard double costs. Windsor is two kinds of kitchen sharing one town. There is a lot of period stock, and there is a steady run of newer flats near the river and the two stations.
The Golden Triangle, the wedge of streets near the centre between the two railway stations, is mostly Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian, and the kitchens there have usually been knocked through to the back with a freestanding range or a big double oven dropped in. The Victorian terraces along Oxford Road run the same way. Out at Clewer and Dedworth you get more interwar and post-war semis with fitted double ovens, and Spital sits somewhere between the two. The bigger detached houses edging the Great Park keep a range cooker or an AGA more often than not.
Then there are the flats. The blocks down by the Brocas and along the river near Windsor and Eton Riverside, and the newer schemes that have gone up around the town, mostly come with a compact single oven and an induction hob. Those are quick for us and cheap for you, so in a single week we end up cleaning a tired AGA in a Triangle townhouse on the Monday and a year-old single oven in a riverside flat on the Tuesday.
