What carpet cleaning costs in Brixton
Numbers first. A bedroom carpet is £36, a living room £43. A through-lounge is £61, and Brixton has plenty of them; the terraces off Acre Lane and Railton Road have had their two downstairs rooms knocked through into one so often that the long run of pile is a room type in its own right, and it is honestly two rooms of work. A flight of stairs is £41. Rugs are £35 up to two square metres, £51 over.

Stairs cost what they cost because they are hand work. A three-storey terrace on Josephine Avenue means two flights with winders at the turns, and every tread gets detailed on hands and knees. There is no machine shortcut for stairs. We have looked.

Hot-water extraction, briefly
Hot-water extraction is what most people mean by steam cleaning. The machine pushes hot water and cleaning solution deep into the pile, then pulls nearly all of it back out along with the dirt that has sunk to the base of the fibres. That buried grit is what wears a carpet out, because it saws at the pile every time someone walks over it, and no hoover reaches it.

Wool needs different handling. Flats carved out of 1870s houses around Railton Road often still have wool or wool-mix carpet on the landings, and wool shrinks if you blast it like nylon. So we test a hidden corner, turn the temperature down and use a milder solution. A synthetic carpet in a newer block can take the full heat.
One honest limit: cleaning removes dirt, not wear. If the pile at the living-room door is crushed flat, it will be a clean, flat patch afterwards. We say so up front rather than let you expect a new carpet for £43.
Brixton floors: conversions, mansion blocks, new builds
Most of our Brixton jobs are in converted Victorian houses. The terraces between Railton Road and the Herne Hill border went up in the 1870s once the railway had arrived, and a large share were split into flats decades ago. Conversion life means shared hallways that no single tenant feels responsible for, stair carpets taking three households of footfall, and bedroom floors that dip where the old boards have settled.
Josephine Avenue is a lovely oddity. Its three-storey terraces date from about 1870 and stand on what was Rush Common, and an Act of 1806 still keeps those deep front gardens free of buildings. So you get a green, tree-lined street where soil and leaf mulch get walked up three floors of carpet every autumn.
We also do the Victorian mansion blocks on Rushcroft Road, ex-council flats in Angell Town, which was rebuilt around ordinary streets in the early 2000s, and the 1950s Loughborough estate with its eleven-storey slab blocks. Those flats usually have hard-wearing synthetic carpet that responds well to extraction. The newer buildings around the centre, Brixton Centric beside the station and Higgs Yard up at Loughborough Junction, run to pale bedroom carpet that shows a single coffee drip at ten paces. Same machine, different settings.
Whatever the building, the hallway and the stairs always look worst, because that is where Brixton walks.
Stains, pets and drying
The stains we meet most are red wine, turmeric, hair dye and the black line a bike chain draws down a hallway carpet. Each gets its own pre-treatment. Wine and general food marks usually go; turmeric and dye are the two we win least often, and we say so before we start rather than after.
Pets next. Flats near Brockwell Park come with dogs, and dogs come with accidents. Fresh ones lift well. Urine that has soaked through to the underlay is harder, because the smell lives underneath the carpet, so we treat it with enzymes and give you a straight verdict on what will be left.
Drying runs four to six hours in most flats. Ground-floor rooms in conversions take longer, since single-glazed bays and solid brick hold moisture. Our last pass over each room is a slow, dry vacuum stroke to pull back as much water as the machine will take, and we bring air movers to jobs that need them. In winter, crack a window and give it the evening.
What happens on the day
We turn up inside the agreed slot and start by shifting the light furniture: sofas, armchairs, coffee tables. We clean beneath them and put them back. Wardrobes, storage beds, pianos and glass cabinets stay put. If the floor is clear of shoes, cables and toy dinosaurs when we arrive, you pay for cleaning rather than tidying.
Parking is our problem, not yours. Central Brixton is controlled parking with cameras on the main roads, and on a busy market day Atlantic Road is best avoided altogether. We plan around all that and carry the cost ourselves; it never appears as an extra on your bill.
Then the clean itself: pre-treat the marks, work the solution through, extract, and finish with the slow drying pass. If a room dries and still disappoints, tell us and we come back to re-do it. Most rooms come up first time, which is why we can afford the promise.
