How hot-water extraction works
The machine pushes water heated to 90 to 95 degrees through the pile along with a solution matched to the fibre, then pulls almost all of it straight back out, dirt included. Before any water goes down we run a commercial pre-vacuum, because dry grit turns to mud the moment hot water hits it, and a pre-spray sits on the traffic lanes for ten to fifteen minutes to loosen what feet have ground in.

The rinse-and-recover stage earns its keep in this part of London. The water is hard, somewhere between 270 and 300 milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre on Thames Water’s own numbers, and solution left sitting in a carpet dries crusty and grabs new dirt within weeks. Pulling the moisture back out is most of the job.
A clean is not a re-pile. Where a doorway has worn flat we can lift out the dirt and revive the colour, but crushed fibre stays crushed, and we say so on arrival rather than after payment. The main carpet cleaning page covers the machinery in more detail if you want it.
What Clapham does to a carpet
Most of SW4 is Victorian and most of it has been carved up. The terraces around Abbeville Road went up largely in the 1880s, Hambalt Road, Narbonne Avenue and Shandon Road among them, and a good share of those houses are now two or three flats apiece. Conversion living concentrates wear: one hallway, one shared staircase, everybody’s shoes.
The mix changes as you move around. Near the Old Town and the Polygon there are Georgian houses with older wool carpets that want cooler water and a gentler solution, so we test a hidden corner before committing the machine. The mansion blocks facing the Common, including the 1930s ones along Northside, tend to be tidy lateral flats where the job is lifting a few years of general grey rather than heavy soiling. The flatshares off the High Street sit at the other extreme: hard-wearing landlord-grade carpet, four or five adults’ worth of traffic, and nobody sure when it was last cleaned. That carpet takes a hot, firm clean very well.
Then there is the Common itself, a couple of hundred acres of grass that spends October to April as mud with grass on top. It comes home on boots, buggy wheels and spaniels, and the desire lines around the 1890 bandstand churn up worst of all. Hallways around here fail first. Not the bedrooms, never the bedrooms.
A note on rugs, since the Abbeville terraces are full of stripped floorboards with one big rug holding the room together. We clean those flat, dry them through and lay them back, £35 for a small one and £51 for anything over two square metres.
Drying times in flats and conversions
Most carpets are walkable again in two to four hours. The variables are pile depth, airflow and the flat itself. A raised-ground-floor room in a terrace dries fast with two sash windows open. A lower-ground conversion with one window onto a lightwell does not, and Clapham has plenty of those, so we bring air movers to basement jobs and finish with a slow pass that recovers as much water as the machine will give up.

We arrive when we said we would, move the light furniture, sofas, chairs, coffee tables, and clean under it.
