What carpet cleaning costs in Putney
Straight numbers first. A bedroom carpet is £36. A living room is £43. A through-lounge is £61, and Putney has plenty of those, because so many of the Edwardian terraces off the Lower Richmond Road had their two ground-floor rooms knocked into one long run of carpet. A flight of stairs is £41. Steep for stairs? They take longer than a bedroom. Every tread is worked with a hand tool, and most Putney staircases add a winder or a half-landing to slow us down further.
Rugs go by size: £35 up to two square metres, £51 above that. If you want every carpet in a two-bed flat done in one visit, the whole lot is £115, which comes out cheaper than pricing the rooms separately.
There is no voucher code and no seasonal sale. The quote you get on the phone is the figure on the invoice, and it does not grow once the machine is through your front door.
Hot-water extraction, and why we trust it
The machine forces hot water and cleaning solution deep into the pile, then pulls almost all of it straight back out, and the dirt comes with it. That is the whole trick. The dirt that ages a carpet is the sharp grit sitting at the base of the fibres, cutting them a little more every time someone walks over, and no hired supermarket machine reaches it.
The pull-back matters as much as the push. London tap water is hard, close to 280 milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre across much of Thames Water’s patch, so solution left behind dries to a faint sticky film that grabs fresh dirt within weeks. We rinse and extract until the recovered water runs clear. Slower, and worth it.
Sharp grit at the base of the fibres ages a carpet faster than anything you can see on top.
Wool needs a different hand. Plenty of older Putney flats still have wool or wool-mix carpet, especially in the mansion blocks up Putney Hill, and wool shrinks if you hit it with high heat and a strong solution. We test a hidden corner, drop the temperature and switch to a gentler product. A synthetic carpet in a newer riverside flat can take a firm, hot clean, so it gets one.
And a straight word before you book: cleaning lifts dirt, not wear. A doorway that has been walked flat will be a clean, flat doorway afterwards. We would rather say that on the phone than surprise you at the end.
Putney carpets, from the river to the Heath
Putney’s housing runs in bands and the carpets follow. Along the Thames sit the newer blocks, Putney Wharf and the flats off Brewhouse Lane, where the carpets are mostly pale, dense synthetics that show every drop of coffee and respond well to a hot clean.
Between the river and the railway you get the late-Victorian and Edwardian terraces off the Lower Richmond Road: through-lounges, straight staircases with a twist at the top, and hallways that catch whatever the towpath sends home. More than twenty rowing clubs work off the Putney Embankment, and on a wet Saturday the mud from that stretch walks itself into halls all over SW15. Boat race weekend, the whole area gets trodden through.
Up Putney Hill the mansion flats have long corridors and older wool carpets that deserve a gentler pass. Out west, around the Dover House estate, it is family cottages with proper gardens, children, and dogs fresh off the Heath, and those carpets take a beating all term long.
Hallways and stairs always come up worst. Book those even if you book nothing else.
Drying, damp and riverside flats
Plan for four to six hours before a cleaned carpet is back to normal life. Socks are fine sooner. Shoes and dog paws are not.
Riverside and garden-level flats take longer, because the air off the Thames carries moisture and some of those older ground floors hold a chill even in June. We carry air movers and set them up at no charge wherever a room needs the help. In summer an open window does most of the work; in January we would rather run the blowers than leave you with a damp smell.
Wool dries on its own schedule and we will not rush it. You get a room-by-room rundown of what to keep off and until when, and if you need a bedroom sleepable that night, say so when you book and we clean it first.
What happens on the day
We arrive in the slot we agreed, not a cheerful hour either side of it. Light furniture gets moved and cleaned under: sofas, armchairs, coffee tables. Wardrobes, storage beds and pianos stay where they are. If the floor is clear of shoes, toys and charging cables before we ring the bell, you are paying for cleaning rather than tidying.
Parking is our problem, not yours. Most of Putney sits inside Wandsworth controlled parking zones and the rules shift street by street; up by the Heath the controlled hour runs 11 to 12 on weekdays, while other zones run much longer. We check your street before the visit, feed whatever needs feeding, and none of it appears on your bill. Boat race day we simply plan around.
The clean itself: vacuum, pre-treat the marks, work the solution in, extract, then a slow final pass to pull out as much water as the machine will take. If a room has not come up right, tell us and we re-clean it free. We would rather lose an hour than leave a bad job in a postcode where everyone talks.
