How we actually clean a carpet
The method is hot-water extraction. Plenty of people call it steam cleaning, though there is barely any steam involved, which always disappoints the people who picture a kettle. Here is what really happens on the day.
First we vacuum. A proper slow vacuum, because dry grit comes out far more easily before it gets wet, and skipping this step is one of the reasons a cheap clean leaves mud. Then we put down a pre-spray suited to the fibre and the level of soiling, and we leave it to work for a few minutes. That dwell time is where the dirt actually loosens. Rush it and you are just wetting the carpet.
Then the machine. Hot water goes in under pressure and comes straight back out, carrying the loosened soil with it, and a strong vacuum pulls most of the moisture back so the pile is left damp rather than soaked. On heavy traffic lanes, the grey channels worn into a hallway by a hundred trips to the front door, we go over them twice and groom the pile so it dries standing up instead of matted flat.

The carpets we meet around Croydon
Croydon is not one kind of home, and the carpets reflect that. Three broad jobs come up again and again, and each one wants handling slightly differently.
The first is the period terrace. Norbury, Thornton Heath, the streets running off Whitehorse Road, plenty of Addiscombe: long Victorian and Edwardian terraces, a lot of them split into flats over the years. The carpets in these are usually on stairs and landings, and stairs are the hardest thing to clean well because the dirt collects on the front edge of every tread where feet land. We clean each tread by hand with a stair tool, not by dragging a big wand over them and hoping.
The second is the ex-council flat. Croydon has a lot of them, from the towers near the centre to the lower blocks out toward New Addington and Shrublands, and they tend to have hard-wearing mid-pile carpet that has taken years of traffic. These respond well. The fibre is tough, it takes a hot rinse, and the difference between before and after is often the most dramatic of any job we do.
The third is the new build. The flats that have gone up around East Croydon and on the old Taberner House site near the council offices, the blocks behind the station: newer carpets, lighter colours, and owners who want them kept that way. Light wool-mix carpet shows every coffee ring, so these are usually about staying ahead of the wear rather than rescuing a disaster.
One Croydon quirk worth a mention. If you live near a Tramlink stop, Sandilands, Lebanon Road, Addiscombe, you will know the fine black dust that drifts in off the line and settles into a hall carpet by the door. Stains, and what we will not promise
This is where most carpet cleaners oversell and we try not to. A stain and a bit of dirt are different problems. General soiling, traffic lanes, a grubby look across the whole floor: that comes up well almost every time. Individual stains are a coin toss that depends entirely on what it is and how long it has been there.
Some things we shift most of the time. Mud, tea, food, washable drinks, general grime. Some things fight back hard: red wine that has dried, old pet accidents that have soaked into the underlay, dye transfer from a cheap rug, anything with bleach in it that has already taken the colour out. Bleach is not a stain at that point, it is missing carpet, and no machine puts colour back.
So we give you a range and we are honest about it. We will tell you on arrival what we expect to clear and what we expect to only improve. Drying times and what to do after
A well-extracted carpet is damp, not wet, and most rooms are dry to walk on in a few hours and properly dry within about half a day. Wool and thick pile hold more moisture and take longer. A cold flat with the windows shut in February takes longer than the same flat in June with a window open.
Open a window if you can. A fan pointed across the floor speeds things up a lot. Keep shoes off until it is dry, and if you must walk on a damp carpet, clean socks rather than bare feet, because feet leave oils that turn into fresh marks. We put little foam blocks under furniture legs so a damp carpet does not pick up rust or wood stain while it dries.
Done right, the floor is back in use the same day. That matters in a flat where there is nowhere else to put the sofa.
