How hot-water extraction actually works
People call it steam cleaning. It is not really steam. Hot-water extraction sprays a hot detergent solution into the carpet pile under pressure, lifts the loosened dirt, and pulls almost all the moisture straight back out through a powerful vacuum head in the same stroke. That last part matters more than anything else. The dirt that ages a carpet sits at the base of the pile where an upright vacuum never reaches. The whole job is getting down to it and rinsing it out.

The order we work in is simple and it does not change. First a pre-spray goes down and sits for a few minutes to break the bond between the soil and the fibre. Then we agitate, working the solution through the pile by hand or with a brush so the marks lift rather than smear. Then the extraction pass rinses the detergent back out with hot water and suction, which is the step a hired supermarket machine does worst, because a weak vacuum leaves water and soap behind in the backing and that is what makes a carpet go crispy or grey again within a fortnight.
