What carpet cleaning costs in Wimbledon
The numbers first. A bedroom is £36. A living room is £43. A through-lounge is £61, and South Wimbledon has plenty of them, because so many of those Victorian terraces had the wall between the front and back rooms taken out decades ago, leaving one long run of carpet that is really two rooms of pile. A flight of stairs is £41. Terrace staircases around here are steep and narrow, every tread gets worked by hand, and that price reflects the time they take rather than any drama about it.
Rugs go by size: £35 up to two square metres, £51 for anything bigger. And if you want every carpet in a two-bed flat done in one visit, that is £115 for the lot.
The figure we give you on the phone is the figure on the invoice. No inspection surcharge, no products added on the day, no was-price theatre. If a job turns out bigger than described, we say so before we plug anything in.
How hot-water extraction works
Hot-water extraction is what most people mean when they say steam cleaning. The machine forces hot water and cleaning solution down into the pile, then pulls nearly all of it back out in the same pass, and the dirt leaves with the water. A rented supermarket machine mists the surface and calls it a day. Extraction gets to the base of the fibres, where years of ground-in grit sit cutting the pile like sandpaper every time someone walks over it.
The rinse is half the job in this part of London. Wimbledon taps run very hard, around 290 on the hardness scale, so solution left behind dries to a sticky mineral film that re-attracts dirt within weeks. We rinse properly and extract hard, which is the whole argument for the method.
Extraction lifts dirt, not wear. Where ten years of feet have crushed the pile flat, you get a cleaner flat pile, and we tell you that before you book.
Bleach spots, sun fading and burns are also beyond any cleaning method. What comes back is the colour and the freshness. What stays is whatever the carpet has physically lost.
Village wool, terrace stairs and new-build greys
Wimbledon has four or five kinds of carpet rather than one, and they want different handling. Up the hill, in the big houses around the Village and along the Common edge, we still find wool carpets and fitted stair runners that would shrink or ripple under a hot, heavy-handed clean. Those get a test patch in a hidden corner, cooler water and a gentler solution.
Down the hill it changes. The grid of terraces around South Park Gardens, and the busier streets off Haydons Road, mostly wear practical wool-mix and synthetic carpets that take a firm clean well, though their steep staircases are slow, hand-detailed work. Out west, the Edwardian family houses in the Apostles at Raynes Park run to landings, box rooms and bedroom carpets that have survived several children each. In the new blocks going up along the Broadway it is tight grey synthetic everywhere, which our machines can run at full temperature without a second thought.
July brings its own rhythm. Some households near the All England Club still let their houses out for the Championships fortnight, to coaches, players’ teams and the odd corporate group, and they want the carpets done in the gap before guests arrive or straight after the last one leaves. Common mud, stains and drying times
The Common is the best and worst thing that ever happened to a Wimbledon hallway. Over 1,100 acres of woodland, heath and horse rides, and from October to March a fair amount of it is mud. It comes home on boots, paws and pushchair wheels, and it settles in the first three metres past the front door. Hallways and stairs always look two shades darker than the rooms. Traffic does that.
Stains, we treat on their merits. Coffee and fresh wine respond well. Pet accidents get an enzyme product that breaks the residue down rather than perfuming over it. The stubborn case is old urine that has soaked through to the underlay, because the smell lives underneath where no rinse can reach, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you a clean that cannot fix it.
Drying takes four to six hours. We finish every room with a slow vacuum-only pass to pull out the last of the water, we bring air movers for ground-floor rooms that hold damp, and we tell you which rooms to keep off and for how long. Winter jobs dry slower with the windows shut; a July clean is dry by teatime.
