Why we use hot-water extraction
Hot-water extraction is the method most people still call steam cleaning, and it is the one we reach for on nearly every carpet. The machine drives hot water and a cleaning solution down into the pile, then draws almost all of it back out, taking the loosened dirt with it. Any residue on the surface is vacuumed off once it dries. The point of doing it this way is reach: extraction gets to the grit that has worked its way to the base of the fibres, the stuff that saws a carpet thin over the years without ever looking especially dirty on top.
A quick word on the water itself. Notting Hill sits in Thames Water territory and the supply here is hard, in the region of 280 parts per million, so a lazy job leaves a mineral film that goes slightly crisp and starts pulling dirt back within weeks. On a wool carpet in a converted villa off Ladbroke Grove we drop the temperature, test a hidden corner first, and go gentler. Toward the north end of the area, around the postwar municipal blocks near Ladbroke Grove, the carpets are often newer and tougher, which suits a firmer clean. We read the carpet before we read the price list.
Then there is the footfall. Portobello Road pulls a large crowd through most Saturdays for the market, and the August bank holiday brings the Carnival, when close to a million people move through these streets over the weekend. All of that walks into hallways and up the communal stairs of flats along and off the main drag. Carnival week in particular leaves a mark on ground-floor and first-floor carpets near the route, and the days after are one of our busier stretches for a reason.
Communal garden squares add to it. Residents come and go to the shared gardens all summer, and grass, soil and grit ride in on shoes to the carpets nearest the garden door. It builds up quietly, and it is exactly the ground-in dirt extraction is built to shift.
Stair runners and wool in period conversions
Stairs are where a lot of Notting Hill carpet work actually lives. A converted villa often has a runner up the middle of an original staircase, held with rods or grippers, and the edges of the treads are bare wood. A runner takes concentrated wear in a narrow strip, so it goes grey and flat down the walking line long before the flat ones in the bedrooms look tired. Drying is worth planning around here. High-ceilinged period rooms help, there is plenty of air, but a ground-floor flat that holds damp is slower, so we bring air movers to those jobs rather than leave a carpet wet into a second day.
How the day goes
We arrive when we said we would. First we move the light furniture, sofas, chairs and coffee tables, and clean underneath; we leave wardrobes, beds with storage drawers and anything heavy or fragile exactly where it stands. If you lift the small clutter off the floor before we get there, the job runs quicker and you are paying us to clean rather than to tidy round your belongings.
Then parking, which in this part of London needs a plan. The borough is one controlled parking zone after another, and a resident permit has never guaranteed anyone an actual space near their own front door. We sort the meter or the bay ourselves and we build that hassle into the arrangement, so it never lands on your bill as a surprise line. During Carnival weekend the road closures make some streets simply unreachable by van, so if you are inside the route we will book you for before or after the bank holiday and tell you so honestly.
After that it is the clean itself: pre-treat the marks, work the solution into the pile, run the extraction, then a slow last pass to draw out as much water as the machine will take. We tell you which rooms to stay off while they dry, usually four to six hours. If a room does not come up the way you hoped, say so, and we come back and re-do it.
