How we actually clean a carpet
The method is hot-water extraction. Most people call it steam cleaning, though there is hardly any steam in it. Here is how it runs, step by step.
We vacuum first. A slow, thorough vacuum, because dry grit comes out far more easily before it gets wet, and skipping this is one of the big reasons a cheap clean leaves mud smeared behind. Then down goes a pre-spray, matched to the fibre and to how grubby the carpet really is, and we leave it a few minutes to work. That waiting time is when the soil loosens its grip. Rush it and you are only wetting the floor.
Then the machine. Hot water goes in under pressure and comes straight back out, carrying the loosened dirt with it, while a powerful vacuum drags most of the moisture away so the pile is left damp rather than swimming. On the worn channels, the grey lanes that a thousand trips to the door grind into a hall, we go over them twice and groom the pile so it dries standing up instead of flattened.

The carpets we meet around Brent
Brent is not one kind of place, and the carpets give that away. Three jobs turn up over and over, and each wants handling a little differently.
First is the period terrace. The long Victorian and Edwardian streets through Harlesden, Willesden and South Kilburn, the bay-fronted houses up toward Queen’s Park, plenty of them carved into flats years ago. A lot have carpet on the stairs and the landing, and stairs are the hardest thing to clean well, because the dirt builds on the front lip of every tread where feet land. Second is the interwar semi. Kingsbury, Kenton and the streets up past Fryent are full of 1930s semi-detached houses, the mock-Tudor sort with a long hall and a front-and-back reception often knocked into one. These tend to have a decent depth of carpet that has drunk in years of family traffic, and they pay you back for the effort. The fibre is usually tough, it takes a hot rinse, and the before-and-after on one of those is about the most satisfying we get.
Third is the new Wembley Park flat. The blocks that have shot up around the stadium, off Olympic Way and Engineers Way and Exhibition Way, are full of newer, lighter carpets and owners who would like to keep them that way. A pale wool-mix shows every coffee ring, so these jobs are usually about staying ahead of the wear rather than rescuing a wreck.
One local thing is worth a mention. On an event day at the stadium the streets around the civic centre fill with tens of thousands of feet, and the flats along Olympic Way pick up a fair bit of that on the way in. We see it on the entrance mats and the first metre of hall carpet, a fine ground-in grime, and a hot extraction shifts it once it is in the pile. A stiff brush at the door will not reach it.
Hard water, and why it matters here
Brent sits on the same hard, chalk-fed supply as most of north London. The water comes from Thames Water and runs to around 290 parts per million, which is hard by any measure. You will know it already from the state of the kettle.
It matters for carpets more than people expect. If a cleaner mixes a strong solution into hard water and then does not rinse it back out properly, the minerals and the leftover detergent dry into a stiff, chalky film deep in the pile. That film feels faintly crunchy underfoot, and worse, it is sticky at a microscopic level, so the carpet grabs fresh dirt and looks grubby again within weeks. A clean that goes off fast is almost always a rinsing problem, not a dirt problem.
So we mix to suit the water and we rinse hard. The last passes of the machine are clear water under pressure, pulling the solution back out rather than letting it dry in. It is the boring part of the job and it is the part that keeps a Brent carpet looking clean.

Stains, and what we will not promise
This is where most carpet cleaners oversell, and we try hard not to. A stain and general dirt are two different problems. Overall soiling, worn traffic lanes, a tired grey look across the whole floor, that comes up well nearly every time. A single set-in stain is a coin toss, and it hangs entirely on what it is and how long it has had to settle.
Plenty of the everyday stuff lifts without much fuss. Mud, tea, food, washable drinks, the ordinary grime of a busy hall. Some things fight back: red wine dried in over a weekend, old pet accidents soaked down into the underlay, dye bled out of a cheap rug, anything with bleach that has already taken the colour out. Bleach is not really a stain by then. It is missing carpet, and no machine puts the colour back.
So you get a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. When we arrive we walk the rooms and tell you which marks should clear and which we reckon will only fade. Drying times and what to do after
A carpet we have extracted properly comes up damp, not wet. You can walk on most rooms inside a couple of hours, and they are fully dry within half a day or so. Open a window if the weather lets you. A fan aimed low across the carpet hurries the drying right along.
